Thought of the Week

To achieve universal education, I feel entrepreneurs, educationists, and the poor themselves should start schooling poor children. In this context, one of the most thought provoking work that I have ever read is James Tooley’s the “The Beautiful Tree.” It is his personal journey into how the world’s poorest people are educating themselves. I’ve always been an ardent believer of self reliance and Tooley beautifully illustrates how “young engaged teachers, passionate entrepreneurs, and teaching models work to ensure that the students are engaged and learning, even in slums.” Lamenting what has gone wrong in the third world is not an option for us now. I hope we can build an elegant edifice out of the rocks believed to be worthless just like the slum children who have stood up to the society to carve out a distinctly different identity in the social hierarchy.- Rai's Radical Thoughts
